Data You Give Us Directly
Search Queries
A name or location entered in a search tool is sent directly to the outside provider that operates that search. The provider processes the query and supplies the results. We do not retain or log those search terms on our systems.
Messages and Contact Submissions
We retain an email or contact submission as needed to respond. Messages remain within our organization unless disclosure is required by a legal obligation.
Data We Gather Automatically
Our servers automatically receive certain technical details whenever a visitor loads a page:
- Page-view timestamps
- Your device's assigned IP address
- Browser type and version
- Operating system and device category
- Visited pages and time spent on them
- The referring website, when one is available
Cookies and Analytics
Cookies are small files saved on a device. They help show how visitors move through the website, including popular pages and common exit points. Analytics providers combine this traffic information for us. You may block cookies through browser controls, although doing so can change how parts of the website function.
What We Do With This Data
- Routing search queries to the appropriate partner service
- Maintaining website availability and performance
- Finding and correcting technical problems
- Understanding which pages are useful and which need improvement
- Displaying advertising that may reflect visitor interests
No Criminal-Record Data on File
We do not maintain, assemble, or sell a database of personal criminal-record information. The website provides general directions to Modoc County record custodians, including the sheriff, Modoc Superior Court, the California Department of Justice, and the California Megan's Law Website. We are not a consumer reporting agency under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Visitor information is not compiled into consumer reports or third-party criminal records.
Third-Party Search Partners
Outside companies power the search boxes. Information submitted through a box is governed by that provider's privacy policy rather than this policy. Each partner controls its own retention and disclosure practices. Review those terms before entering a query.
Links to Other Websites
Links may lead to sheriff pages, court portals, California agencies, legal-aid resources, or third-party search tools. Once you leave this website, the destination's privacy practices control. Review them before providing personal information.
Some advertising providers may track activity across websites to select targeted ads. That activity occurs through the provider's systems, not ours.
Who Might See Your Data
Personal data is not sold. It may be disclosed to the following recipients in limited circumstances:
- Analytics providers that measure traffic and performance
- Search partners that process submitted queries
- Advertising networks that serve ads on the website
- Government or law-enforcement bodies acting under a valid legal order
How We Protect Your Data
We use standard safeguards for the data collected. No internet-connected service can guarantee complete security, however, so we cannot promise that a breach will never occur.
Users Under 18
The website is intended for adults, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone younger than 18. If a minor has provided data, contact us so it can be deleted promptly.
Your Data Rights
Depending on your residence and whether a law applies, the California Consumer Privacy Act, California Civil Code section 1798.100 et seq., may provide additional rights concerning personal information. At a minimum, you may:
- Request deletion of your data
- Ask for access to information held about you
- Request correction of inaccurate information
- Opt out of certain forms of processing
Updates to This Policy
This policy may be revised. An updated version will appear here with a new effective date, so review the page periodically for changes in our data practices.
